The number of students enrolled in virtual schools is growing. Students enrolled in virtual schools range from students taking one or two courses to students taking all classes through a virtual school.
Virtual schools may be run by the state or another public institution, a private school or a college or a for profit business. Several states including Florida, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana,
and Missouri offer virtual or on-line schools. K12 runs virtual schools in several states.
Virtual schools make it possible for students to take advanced classes not offered in their current school. Virtual schools also provide support for home school families. The Monte Vista School district in Colorado runs the On Line Academy for grades 4-12 designed to meet the needs of students that are not successful in a traditional classroom. According to an article in Education World, the majority of the students in the Online Academy are either dropouts or have been expelled from regular schools.
