Primary Sources
William Bartram, Travels of William Bartram, ed. Mark van Doren
William Bartam, a well-known naturalist and traveler, provided vivid descriptions of British colonists, Indians, and nature.
Cotton Mather, Diary of Cotton Mather, 1681-1724, 2 vols.
This diary is from one of the most well-known colonial ministers. He was a staunch defender of the Congregationalists and opponent of revivalism.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. and William L. Andrews, The Pioneers of the Black Atlantic: Five Slave Narratives from the Enlightenment, 1772-1815.
Although slave narratives from the colonial period are rare, five of them have been assembled by Andrews and Gates. The compilation includes the narratives of Ottobah Cugoano, John Jea, John Marrant, Olaudah Equiano and James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw. Most of the individuals were native Africans, extensive transatlantic travellers, slaves for part of their lives and Christian converts.

Nathan R. Herrod is currently pursuing PhD in American History with an emphasis on Colonial Religious History at the University of Florida. He has an MA in American History from the University of Florida, an MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and B.A. in History and Religious Studies from Texas A&M University. He has experience teaching history, Bible and speech in a Christian high school. He has also served as a TA for American History, World History and Native American History courses.
